In the fall of 1918 influenza struck in Massachusetts, and Braintree was impacted as well. Here’s a list of people who died from the illness, the newspapers reported people died of The Grippe, pneumonia, and influenza.
Arthur Mack died, aged 26 years. Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Mack of Middle Street, Braintree. Death after only a week’s illness was caused by pneumonia following the influenza. Survived by his wife and three month old son.
Arvid Pearson, victim of the influenza, aged 37 years, of 27 River street, Braintree. He was sick less than a week. Born near Stockholm Sweden. His wife Sarah Pearson is seriously sick, and survived by two year old son Arvid Thorne Pearson. He was employed at the fore river works.
Everett Hull, aged 25 years, of East Braintree. A wife and child survive him.
Frank Littlefield of 169 Arnold Street, Braintree, aged 31 years. A member of the Braintree Guards, commanded by Captain Charles H. Ferguson acted as escort, marching a portion of the way to the cemetery and standing at “present arms” as the cortege passed. A letter carrier, he had a severe cold, which he had hoped to overcome, while working, developed into pneumonia.
Miss Helen Lousie Abercrombie of Elm Street, Braintree. An active member of the Cochato club, a leading bowler, Red Cross Member, and President of the Samaritan Society. Her death was a surprise as she had been ill for a short time. Passing from pneumonia.
Verna Burrell, aged 6 years, 122 Front Street, Braintree. After a short illness of influenza. She attended the first grade of the Jonas Perkins school. Survived by her parents, and two brothers and two sisters. The little girl’s father, Alton Burrell, was carried to the Quincy hospital Thursday suffering from the same dread sickness.

Miss Rosa Rubert, aged 36 years, 63 Dewey Street, Braintree.
Fred Spencer, aged 29 years, Liberty Street.
Dennis E. Sawyer, Sr. Factory Hill, Braintree, died Saturday, and his son Dennis Sawyer, Jr., aged 5 years died Monday.
Francis J. Stevens, aged 27 years, Jersey Avenue, Braintree. Employee of New Haven Railroad, leaves a wife and 3 children
Franklin King Patch, aged 33 years, employed in Quincy in his Father’s coal dealership. Leaves a Father and StepMother. A brother has died in the service. He was taken ill in Braintree Friday, and later in the day was brought to Quincy, his condition failed to improve and he passed away early Sunday afternoon.
Howard Sears, an engineer on the New Haven Railroad, aged 31 years, of 36 Shaw Avenue Braintree.
William Hauston, aged 26 years, River Street. Leaves a wife and two children.
Miss Ruth Rollins, 2nd year student of Thayer Academy. Leaves parents Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Rollins of 197 Elm Street, Braintree and brother. Word was sent to her father who was on a Western business trip.
Walter B. Paine, aged 30 years, of 692 Washington Street, Braintree.
